BREAKING: At least 39 killed after train derailment in Cordoba

At least 39 people have now been confirmed dead and more than 150 injured after two high-speed trains derailed and collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province.

The crash occurred on Sunday evening when an Iryo service from Málaga to Madrid derailed on a stretch of recently renovated track and crossed onto the adjacent line, where it struck a Renfe Alvia service bound for Huelva.

Emergency services have reported 39 fatalities and 152 people injured, including a number in serious condition, as rescue and medical teams continue to work at the scene.

Local authorities and Protección Civil have established field hospitals and reception centres in Adamuz, while nearby communities have been assisting with shelter, blankets and supplies.

Services are expected to remain suspended for most of Monday.

Regional authorities have deployed intensive care units and critical support teams to the scene, with hospitals in the region activating their emergency protocols.

Last night the Royal Family sent their condolences to the victims of the crash, whilst Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said the full resources of the Government are available in the region.

He is also expected to visit the scene of the crash later today.

Investigators have described the accident as “very strange” due to the modern track and recently inspected trains involved in the crash.
