Tributes paid after UME soldier dies in traffic accident

Tributes have been paid after a soldier from the Military Emergency Unit, the UME, has died and two others have been injured in a traffic accident while fighting the wildfire at Las Peñas de Riglos in Huesca.

The accident happened in the Barranco de Atarés area, near Monte Oroel, where firefighting efforts have been concentrated. The UME vehicle involved was carrying four people when it crashed, killing one soldier and injuring two others.

One of those injured has been taken to Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza.

More than 500 UME personnel are deployed in the area, and the regional government has announced several days of mourning.

Authorities have praised the emergency services working to contain the fire.
