Special: Millions across Spain watch historic solar eclipse

Spain has witnessed a historic total solar eclipse, with the Moon completely blocking out the Sun across a large part of the country.

The eclipse was the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912, with the path of totality crossing thirteen autonomous communities, from Galicia and Asturias through to the Balearic Islands.

The maximum occurred at around 8.30pm, with totality lasting between one and two minutes depending on location.

Hundreds of thousands of people travelled to viewing areas, with emergency services reporting a generally orderly operation despite some incidents.

The event was also closely monitored because of the risk of wildfires and the huge increase in traffic expected around viewing locations.
