Government calls on Morocco to investigate Ceuta migrant crisis

The government has intensified its response to the mass migrant crossings into Ceuta, with Defence Minister Margarita Robles calling on Morocco to carry out a full investigation into the events that led to the unprecedented influx.

It is the first time a senior member of the government has publicly pointed to Morocco since the crisis began.

Meanwhile, the Audiencia Nacional has requested reports from the Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and intelligence services to determine whether the crossings were the result of a coordinated action rather than a spontaneous movement of migrants.

The inquiry forms part of a preliminary judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crisis, which claimed dozens of lives and prompted Spain to reinforce security along the border.

The Spanish and Moroccan governments continue to cooperate on border management, while the investigation remains ongoing.
