José Luis Ábalos Seeks to Overturn 24-Year Prison Sentence in Mask Contracts Case

Former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos has asked the Supreme Court to overturn his twenty-four-year prison sentence, arguing that his case should have been heard by the National Court rather than the Supreme Court after he resigned as an MP and lost his parliamentary immunity.

His legal team says the proceedings breached his right to a judge predetermined by law and has requested that the conviction be declared void.

Ábalos continues to deny any criminal wrongdoing.

The Supreme Court sentenced him last month over the mask contracts case and will now consider the application before deciding whether the appeal can proceed.
