Gibraltar Border Fence Removed as Spain and UK Begin New Post-Brexit Era

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has described the demolition of the Gibraltar border fence as a historic moment, marking the start of a new chapter in relations between Gibraltar and Spain.

Speaking at a ceremony in La Línea de la Concepción, Sánchez said the removal of what he called “the last wall in continental Europe” follows the entry into force of the new agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on Gibraltar.

Under the deal, routine checks at the land border have ended, with Spain assuming responsibility for Schengen controls at Gibraltar’s port and airport.

The agreement is expected to benefit the thousands of people who cross the frontier each day for work, business and tourism, while strengthening economic links across the region.
