Policía Nacional detain criminal gang who targeted elderly

Policía Nacional has dismantled a criminal group accused of targeting elderly people using the so-called “hug” or abrazo cariñoso method.

Investigators say the suspects approached victims in the street, gained their confidence by offering an embrace or other distraction, and then stole jewellery before leaving the scene.

Officers arrested several people during the operation and recovered a quantity of stolen jewellery.

Policía Nacional is reminding the public, particularly older people, to remain cautious when approached by strangers offering unexpected displays of affection or assistance.
