The Spanish government says it is watching “with interest” ahead of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s upcoming testimony in the Plus Ultra investigation.

Zapatero, who has been placed under formal investigation, is due to appear before the National Court to address allegations surrounding the airline’s pandemic‑era bailout.

Government sources said they expect the former prime minister to “defend himself and clear up any doubts”, stressing that the executive will not comment on judicial proceedings.

The case centres on whether political influence played a role in the decision to grant the airline €53 million in state aid.
