1 dead and 27 injured, after a bus with British tour group crashes into ravine in La Gomera

A bus has plunged into a ravine on the GM‑2 road in San Sebastián de La Gomera, leaving one person dead and fourteen injured, three of them seriously.

The accident occurred shortly after 13:15, according to the Canary Islands emergency coordination centre, which immediately deployed multiple medical and rescue teams to the scene.

Ambulances from the Canary Emergency Service, a medical helicopter, a GES helicopter and police units were mobilised to treat the victims.

• A 73-year-old man with multiple injuries was initially taken to La Gomera’s hospital, before being taken by helicopter to the University Hospital of the Canary Islands on Tenerife.
• A 42-year-old man, with multiple injuries, was also first of all taken to hospital on La Gomera, before being airlifted by helicopter to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital, also on Tenerife.
• Two seriously injured people were taken by ambulances to Our Lady of Guadalupe Hospital on La Gomera.
• A further 23 people with minor injuries were taken to hospital on La Gomera.

The regional government declared an alert for multiple‑casualty incidents under the PLATECA civil‑protection plan.

The crash happened near the site of another bus accident almost a year ago that also resulted in a fatality.

Yvette Cooper, the UK foreign secretary, has just posted on social media about the crash.

“My thoughts are with those affected by the tragic incident involving a bus carrying British holidaymakers in the Canary Islands,” she says.

“We are in touch with the local authorities and ready to support Brits and their families,” she adds.

Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo and vice‑president Manuel Domínguez said they are closely monitoring the emergency response and expressed their support and solidarity with the victims and their families.
