Government to Create Independent Authority to Investigate Rail Accidents After Adamuz Tragedy
share close

The government will create a new independent authority to investigate railway accidents, following the Adamuz tragedy in January.

The new body will merge the existing commissions for rail, maritime and aviation incidents, and is expected to begin operating after the summer.

Its establishment will mean the current railway‑accident commission (CIAF) will cease its work mid‑investigation, although on‑site technical staff will continue.

The move comes as investigators analyse key evidence from the Adamuz crash, including rail fragments and welds, while the judge continues to seek specialised experts.

The government says the new authority will strengthen independence and improve safety oversight across all transport modes.
