Government and Spanish Episcopal Conference to Launch New System for Abuse Victim Reparations
The government and the Spanish Episcopal Conference will sign an agreement on Monday to create a new system for recognising and repairing victims of sexual abuse in the Church whose cases can no longer go through the courts because the offences have expired or the perpetrators have died.
The plan establishes a mixed Church‑State mechanism with participation from victims, and the Church will cover the cost of financial compensation.
The Defensor del Pueblo will oversee the proposals for each case, and a broader collaboration agreement between the Church, the government and religious orders will be formalised within a month.
