No military objections to SAIC factory in Galicia

Defence Minister Margarita Robles has told the president of the Galician government, Alfonso Rueda, that her department will issue a favourable report on plans for a Chinese car factory in Ferrol. The proposed SAIC plant had raised concerns because of its proximity to the military arsenal and Navantia shipyard, including previous warnings over possible espionage risks. A court in Madrid has opened an investigation into the €6.3 million purchase of a luxury apartment in the Chamberí district by the regional government. Work underway on Spanish/French electricity interconnector

Work is underway on a major submarine electricity cable between Spain and France, being laid from Lemoiz in Bizkaia across the Bay of Biscay towards Bordeaux. The project is expected to be operational in 2028, increasing electricity exchange capacity between the two countries from 2,800 to 5,000 megawatts. The €1.6 billion European Investment Bank financing forms part of a project designed to strengthen energy security and help integrate more renewable electricity into the European grid.

People smuggling gang detained in Barcelona

Policia Nacional has dismantled an alleged criminal organisation involved in the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women in Barcelona and Tarragona. Four people have been arrested and five women have been freed. Police say one victim was recruited in Colombia with the promise of a job in Spain, but was instead forced into prostitution and told she had to repay a supposed €4,000 travel debt. Investigators say the women were subjected to coercion and strict control by the organisation.

Preparations are continuing for Wednesday’s total solar eclipse, with the Interior Ministry activating the State Coordination and Direction Committee for the operation. Border controls between Spain and Italy reintroduced in response to Italian actions over Ceuta

The Spanish government is temporarily reinstating border controls for travellers arriving from Italy, following the Italian government’s refusal to lift its suspension of Spain from the Schengen agreement. The checks will begin at midnight on Saturday at Spanish ports and airports, with travellers subject to random identity and nationality checks using their passports. AEMET says generally stable weather is expected across much of Spain for Wednesday’s total solar eclipse, with mostly clear skies in many areas.
