No military objections to SAIC factory in Galicia

Defence Minister Margarita Robles has told the president of the Galician government, Alfonso Rueda, that her department will issue a favourable report on plans for a Chinese car factory in Ferrol. The proposed SAIC plant had raised concerns because of its proximity to the military arsenal and Navantia shipyard, including previous warnings over possible espionage risks. Work is underway on a major submarine electricity cable between Spain and France, being laid from Lemoiz in Bizkaia across the Bay of Biscay towards Bordeaux. The project is expected to be operational in 2028, increasing electricity exchange capacity between the two countries from 2,800 to 5,000 megawatts. The €1.6 billion European Investment Bank financing forms part of a project designed to strengthen energy security and help integrate more renewable electricity into the European grid.
