Work underway on Spanish/French electricity interconnector

Work is underway on a major submarine electricity cable between Spain and France, being laid from Lemoiz in Bizkaia across the Bay of Biscay towards Bordeaux.

The project is expected to be operational in 2028, increasing electricity exchange capacity between the two countries from 2,800 to 5,000 megawatts.

The €1.6 billion European Investment Bank financing forms part of a project designed to strengthen energy security and help integrate more renewable electricity into the European grid.
