Border controls between Spain and Italy reintroduced in response to Italian actions over Ceuta

The Spanish government is temporarily reinstating border controls for travellers arriving from Italy, following the Italian government’s refusal to lift its suspension of Spain from the Schengen agreement.

The checks will begin at midnight on Saturday at Spanish ports and airports, with travellers subject to random identity and nationality checks using their passports.

Non-EU nationals will also have their visas or residence permits checked.

The measures are due to remain in place until 7 September, unless the situation changes.

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has criticised Italy’s decision, saying it damages the unity of the European Union.

Italy says it will not accept what it describes as ultimatums from Madrid and will not reconsider its suspension of Schengen arrangements until 15 August.
