Los Gallardos Fire Becomes Spain’s Deadliest Wildfire of the 21st Century

The wildfire that swept through the Los Gallardos area of Almería has become Spain’s deadliest wildfire of the 21st century, after claiming at least twelve lives and leaving dozens of others affected.

The tragedy surpasses the death toll from previous major wildfires in Spain this century and is now being described as one of the country’s worst wildfire disasters in modern times.

Regional authorities have also called it the deadliest wildfire ever recorded in Andalusia.

The fire spread rapidly through rural communities after breaking out on Thursday, driven by extreme temperatures, strong winds and exceptionally dry vegetation.

Many victims were caught while attempting to leave the area, with several found in vehicles and others discovered after trying to escape on foot.

Search and recovery operations have continued throughout the day as emergency services work to locate those still unaccounted for.

Hundreds of firefighters, supported by the Military Emergencies Unit, Guardia Civil and aerial firefighting aircraft, remain deployed as crews continue efforts to bring the blaze under control.

Authorities are also providing support to families awaiting the identification of victims while investigators examine the cause of the fire.

Early indications suggest the blaze may have started following the failure of an electricity cable, although the investigation remains ongoing.

The disaster has prompted messages of condolence from political leaders across Spain and renewed calls for vigilance as extreme heat and wildfire conditions continue across much of the country.
