At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and more than 100 injured after two high-speed trains derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba on Sunday evening.

An Iryo service travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed at around 7:45 pm and crossed onto the adjacent track, colliding with a second train bound for Huelva.

Guardia Civil and emergency services report 10 confirmed fatalities and well over 100 passengers injured, including at least 25 seriously, while a number of people were initially reported trapped as rescue operations continued.

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalucía have been suspended and regional authorities have deployed intensive care units and critical support teams to the scene.

Investigations into the cause of the derailment are under way, with national and regional leaders expressing condolences and support for victims and families.
