Protests held as Valencia observes first anniversary of deadly floods

Hundreds of people gathered in Valencia yesterday on the first anniversary of the regions floods, to demand the resignation of regional President Carlos Mazón, accusing him of criminal negligence related to last year’s floods.

The protest came as Mr. Mazón declared the 29th October an official day of Remembrance for the victims of last years’ devastating natural disaster.

Participants displayed two hundred and twenty-nine thermal blankets symbolising the lives lost, honouring the victims and calling for accountability.

Yesterday afternoon saw a service of remembrance held for the victims at the Museum of Sciences in Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences complex, with the King, as well as political leaders joining over 800 people attending the service.

Meanwhile Huelva was placed under a red-level weather warning yesterday, after heavy rain trapped people in their homes.

Schools in the city were also closed due to flooding, whilst the University of Huelva suspended classes due to the heavy rains.
