Supreme Court judge, Ángel Hurtado, has ordered the prosecution of the Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz and Madrid’s Chief Prosecutor, Pilar Rodríguez, over an alleged press leak related to Alberto González Amador, the partner of Madrid’s Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
This unprecedented move could lead to García Ortiz’s disqualification from office.
Last night government officials rallied around Mr. Ortiz, citing the “presumption of innocence”, whilst saying it retained full confidence in his positon.
Meanwhile opposition parties are calling for Mr. Ortiz’s resignation, as well as the departure of those who offered him direction.
Both PP and Vox demanded his immediate resignation, with the PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo stated it was time for García Ortiz, and those who advised him to resign, while Vox’s José Antonio Fúster called it Spain’s largest act of corruption.
Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Rodríguez both deny any wrongdoing, and said they intend to clear their names.
